Book Report: Dearly Devoted Dexter

'Dexter, your friendly neighborhood serial killer, is a police department blood-spatter expert who, in his spare time, kills people. Not just anyone, you understand--he only kills other killers, people whom he believes deserve it. Is this because Dexter really has a heart of gold? No, he's a monster (he is the first to admit it), but at least he tries to steer his evil into productive channels. In the second of Lindsay's alliteratively titled thrillers (following last year's Darkly Dreaming Dexter), Dexter's nemesis, Sergeant Doakes, is getting a little too close for comfort, and there is also the matter of a psychopath on the loose. When Dexter's two problems eventually link up . . . well, what's a well-meaning homicidal maniac to do? Dexter, the cheerfully sociopathic crime fighter, is one of mystery fiction's most original, compelling, and oddly endearing heroes.'

First Sentence:
"It's that moon again, slung so fat and low in the tropical night, calling out across a curdled sky and into the quivering ears of that dear old voice in the shadows, the Dark Passenger, nestled snug in the backseat of the Dodge K-car of Dexter's hypothetical soul."

What a character! I know Dexter is coming to basic cable, but he belongs on USA, where 'characters are welcome'. Dexter is truly one of a kind; a Jeckyll and Hyde of modern day. Blood Splatter expert by day, dark-angel avengilist by night, this story is a touch Boondock Saints and a touch something truly original. The action never stops, not even to breath, as scenes interrupt themselves and the plot keeps boiling. Plus with Dexter's awesome sense of humor, this makes for one book that truly deserves all the fame it's gotten.

I enjoyed the fast pace, the personal first-person-POV, and the violence and honesty Dexter represents.
Five out of five stars for entertainment and thrills.
